Beautiful day in Lakeland.
Yanks came from behind to win 9-8.
I'm a patient person but Joba looked so uncomfortable on the mound from the 1st pitch. After warming up in the pen Joba spotted a young girl maybe 5 years old and reached over the seats to hand her a ball. Both she and he had a big smile. Unfortunately Joba didn't smile for the rest of the day.
Velocity wise he was ok. Often hitting 92mph and once I saw 93mph on the scoreboard. But it's the same old story. He can't put any away 0-2 or 1-2. Simply has erratic control. Sure it's only his second outing and I read on LoHud he was working intentionally inside. He doesn't seem to pitch with confidence. Overall he showed me nothing.
Phil Hughes was OTOH is the complete opposite. As a starter he has a commanding presence on the mound. He yielded 3 hits one a bases empty HR to Rayburn while striking out two in 2.2. From my perspective he looked ok. I said if this competition with Joba was a boxing match it's Hughes by a TKO.
Jason Hirsh pitched an impressive inning and Ryan Pope got the save.
Offensively we had a number of bright spots.
Granderson was 2 for 3 with a walk and RBI. He also made a nice running catch over the head in dead CF which is 420 feet. He also once again showed a pretty good arm. Clearly he has by far our best arm in CF.
Tex took Phil Coke deep on the 1st pitch. Coke looks like a bum. Over-grown hair, beard and waistline. He shouldn't be able to successfully compete in the shape he is in. Tex was 2 for 3 today.
Gardner got another bunt base hit. I believe all his hits so far have been on bunts.
Greg Golson hit the two run HR giving us the win. Golson looks like a good hitter. Thames and Wynn have looked feeble with the bat so far.
Hoffman was 1 for 2 but despite a .125 BA he has had a number of nice swings and has very good speed and range.
Cano was 0-3 today but it just seems so confident and continues to swing only at pitches he can drive. I expect a break-out year for Robbie.
