The veteran outfielder agreed Thursday to a $19 million, two-year contract to stay with the Angels rather than test the free-agent market again.
"I really feel happy here with Los Angeles," Abreu said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas. "I really enjoy to play for them, and I think when they started with the conversation for the contract and we didn't have any problems back and forth, it was a nice negotiation. It was no problem to stay and come back with the Angels."

Good for Bobby and a well deserved raise...still less than he made here, but what do you expect

I hope Damon and Matsui don't see Abreu's deal as the benchmark going rate for aging outfielders or we won'e see either one again.

2 years might be a reasonable gamble on a still-productive 35-year old. And the money is not outrageous. But I can't help but think that this year is going to end up being his best one in LA.

I think Matsui realizes that he's very likely the primary DH if he comes back to the Yankees, and he seems to really want to do that. Plus, he's also still very productive (and don't forget how bad his knees were at the beginning of the season). Would a one-year deal for about $10M with an option for a 2d year be too much?
As for Damon, I'm not sure. He's more than a year older than either Matsui or Abreu, and he's clearly lost a step or 3, but his bat is still productive and he seems to want to play til he's 40. He may be looking for a 3 or 4-year deal. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do that (and, more importantly, neither would Cashman). And while he seems to enjoy playing in the Bronx, he seemed to enjoy Boston, too, but he took the Yankees bigger offer back in 05. I guess the question is whether anybody's going to offer him a multi-year deal.

That is the question, DavidL. It might be a hard market for a long term deal for Johnny, even though he had a great year. It will be interesting to see what happens with JD and Godzilla.
