STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Philip Speranza, 56, of Eltingville, a plant manager and avid Yankees fan who also published a baseball website, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Speranza settled in Eltingville in 1964.
Mr. Speranza worked for over 10 years as a plant manager for Tech Products. He was still working at the time of his death.
He graduated from Tottenville High School, and earned an associate's degree from the College of Staten Island.
He was a parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville, where he also played volleyball.
Mr. Speranza was an avid Yankees and New Jersey Devils fan.
He published the website, BehindTheBombers.com, which was the longest independent running Yankees website community on the Internet, according to family.
Mr. Speranza's nephew, Thomas Montalto, wrote a farewell letter to his uncle which was posted on the website's home page on Tuesday. Mr. Montalto thanked his uncle for giving him the passion for being a Yankees fan and said he was happy to have redesigned the website for him recently. He promised fans the website would continue in his uncle's tradition.
"Uncle Phil, I hope you know how much you meant to me as I can not begin to imagine the rest of my days without you in my life. I will treasure our memories forever and never let you out of my heart," wrote his nephew on the website.
"He was always happy and cheerful and would make everyone around him smile," added his niece, Diane Montalto.
Surviving are three sisters, Madeline Montalto, Janet Renschler and Joan McLoughlin, and his longtime companion of 20 years, Maureen Roe.
The funeral will be Friday from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Child Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
