Sorry, more specific, first million seller by an American Group during the Brit invasion.

Beach boys? Good vibrations? You might really seriously think that would be it! But nada..... One hit wonder.

I was going to guess the Monkees, but your clue negates them.
But it does dredge up "The Ballad of the Green Berets." Don't remember the singer. But that song always seemed such an oddball hit single.

But that song always seemed such an oddball hit single. Good stab, but no. I think it was fairly early during the invasion, maybe late 64, early 65. Extra helpful, if you saw it, hint: The lead singer/song writer once emerged from the Arsenio Hall audience, and walked around the audience area stairs, singing it, with the actual song playing too.

Good clues, though I did not see the Arsenio episode.
Peter and Gordon? Don't know if they were Brits or Americans, but the era is right.
Not sure of the title but, "I don't care what they say I won't stay in a world without love."
It was all over the radio back in those days, and unrequited love is a very popular topic.

Turns out P&G were Brits. Ronettes, "Be My Baby"? Good song, not it, not a female Group.

About as opposite of that classic as it gets. Almost a novelty song.

Hmmm ...

Wild guess, Monster Mash by Bobby βBorisβ Puckett? Excellent stab, but not it. Think silly lyrics.

They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha-Ha) Before that one. There was/is a rhyme in the Group name.
