I knew who Steely Dan was when I was a kid. I thought they were OK. Just not heavy enough for me. Now I love them.

I was always a fan. Somehow my kid -he's 25 now- discovered Steely Dan while in college all by himself. Huge fan. It's been really fun going to a few of their concerts with him. He was also big into ELO so we saw them too.

One of the guys in my college dorm played in electric guitar in a band. I pretended playing it to King Charlemagne and everyone in the dorm teased the guitar owner that I looked more like a rock star than him. My wife thinks I’m a great singer and wasted my talent being a boring engineer. Realistically, my voice was never strong enough, but being a rock star to my wife and grandkids is good enough for me🎸🎶🎤👨🎤🎵

Steely Dan is awesome. Love their music. Fortunate to see them 3 times. But, the last time was about 4 months after Walter Becker passed.....still really good....just not the same.

From Wikipedia
Steely Dan was formed in when Dias placed an ad in The Village Voice in the summer of 1970 that read: "Looking for keyboardist and bassist. Must have jazz chops!dupasneed not apply".Fagen and Becker responded to the advertisement.

My Steely Dan's favourite is "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" - great cover version of Duke Ellington's composition.
It's not on this Top 30. Maybe because it's not a song but instrumental recording.

A little trivia....
When Chevy Chase was in college, he played drums in a band that had Donald Fagan and Walter Becker in it called the Leather Canary. Word was that Chase had perfect pitch and was really good rhythmically and melodically.
Outside of Caddyshack, didn't ever care much for CC's comedy, but cool that he has that background with the boys from Steely Dan.

Here’s an added tidbit on CC Behind the drums is Chevy Chase, familiar around campus as a gifted musician and good-natured goofball who’s been known to drop his pants after losing late-night games of ”dare” poker.

Love Steely Dan. Recently added Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic to my vinyl collection. Vinyl collection! I’m impressed. I know that vinyl gives you the actual sound, but when I was in college my dusty, scratched records had too much snap, crackle, and pop. I was an early convert to digital, even with the initial compromises. I have a friend with a $10,000 system and there are a few songs or compositions where I appreciate the vinyl, but I still often hear too many distractions. I assume you take better care of your vinyl.

Still listen to SD, all....the....time!
Their music has not dated one bit.
Aja is Friar's favorite, and not just because it's his initials...!
BBT and GF had it on 8-track during a road trip during the summer of 1979, driving from Indiana to Sunset Beach, NC. It was perfect. "AJA", "Peg" "Deacon Blues", and GF's personal fave of that record "Home At Last", which has that killer drum shuffle groove by the great Bernard Purdie.
Jules loves them, too! Her fave is "Kid Charlemagne", because she mis-heard the lyrice 'day-glow freaks', thinking Fagen sang 'dago freaks'. (she's full Italian). LOL!
So many great songs, and GF is still discovering them:
Brooklyn Caves of Altimira Don't Take Me Alive Doctor Wu Night by Night Pretzel Logic
Friar could go on and on....
SD has a legitimate claim to being the best American band of all time.
Suck it, Aerosmith and the Dead!

Aja is great, as is Can’t Buy a Thrill and Pretzel Logic. Those are my three favorite albums.

I saw them twice at the Capitol Theatre (Knuckles' stomping ground) recently. Unfortunate that Walter Becker wasn't there. But man! Great great show in a small venue.

Recently, I've gotten stuck on Haitian Divorce, Razor Boy, Dirty Work, and the 2 Gold Teeth songs.
