Indeed, the plan "right now" is for John Sterling to hold a press conference Friday at Yankee Stadium to announce his retirement from calling Yankees games on radio, confirming initial report from @andrewmarchand

John Sterling is retiring, effective immediately.
“I am a very blessed human being. I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years. As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years. It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.”

He called 5,420 regular season Yankees games and 211 postseason Yankees games since 1989.
He will be honored in a pregame ceremony on April 20.

According to Michael Kay he's just tired and I get it. The traveling and all that must be tough.

Really sad about this. Just listened on bunch of calls including the 2001 Hr calls game typing HRs by Tino and Scott Brosius, vs D backs in that epic WS.
Also just listened to Jeter s last home game vs Os GW hit, top notched call.

John Sterling received a ton of attention for his superb voice, his clever or goofy HR calls and his "Theeeeeee Yankees win" finishes. But, if you listened to him call a game, it was very apparent how deeply knowledgable he was about the game and how well he described the action.

Aaron Boone said he was "bummed" about John Sterling's retirement. He talked about the announcer's importance to the Yankees, did a few impressions and shared some stories. More to come later.
