Yanks look for Lidle to prove himself
Tampa Bay (57-87) at New York (87-56), 7:05 p.m. ET
By Ryan Mink / MLB.com
Looking at the statistics, Cory Lidle's time with the Yankees has been tumultuous to say the least.
One start he'll look like a steady arm to round out the Yankees' top four starters and the next he has a quick exit to the showers.
If the trend continues, Lidle should have a steady outing Wednesday against the Devil Rays. The Yankees starter allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings against Baltimore in his last start. So he's due.
In the four starts Lidle has reached the sixth inning, he has a 1.48 ERA. In the three starts he hasn't reached the sixth, he has an ERA of 13.55.
Before his last meltdown, Lidle pitched six scoreless innings against the Twins while giving up just two hits. Before that, against the Angels on Aug. 26, he surrendered five runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
But Lidle isn't looking at his statistics.
"I'm pretty consistent," Lidle said. "This last outing, the numbers may not look like it, but I didn't think I threw the ball bad. ... If I'm talking about being inconsistent, I'm thinking about my performance, not the results against them."
The Yankees, who are basically in preparation mode for the playoffs, need a fourth starter for the postseason. Jaret Wright and Lidle seem to be the frontrunners, but rookie Jeff Karstens also pitched well in four starts this season.
Lidle is the veteran of all the choices and has been in the playoffs before, seemingly making him the leading candidate for the job. He said he doesn't concern himself with that at all.
But if he's going to be depended on, the Yankees are looking for him to be steadier, starting Wednesday.
Pitching matchup
MIN: RHP Jason Hammel (0-2, 5.61 ERA)
Hammel has never faced the Yankees and will make just the sixth start of his career.
NYY: RHP Cory Lidle (11-10, 4.75 ERA)
Lidle is 2-4 with 7.20 ERA in seven career starts against the Devil Rays.
Player to watch
Hideki Matsui went 4-for-4 in his first start back from wrist surgery Tuesday night and should be in Wednesday's lineup at designated hitter again.
