In the works for Opening Day: Lidle's widow may throw out first pitch Plans still in the works to honor right-hander on Opening Day By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com TAMPA, Fla. -- Melanie Lidle, the wife of the late Cory Lidle, may throw out a ceremonial first pitch at the Yankees' season opener. Plans have not yet been finalized, though discussions are ongoing, a Yankees spokesman said. The club's interest in honoring Lidle at the Yankee Stadium contest was first reported by The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Yankees are scheduled to open their season on April 2 against the Devil Rays. newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070321&content_id=1853353&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyyGotta like the way this team treats their players, ex-players, and families. I believe I read the Yanks will be wearing black arm bands for the entire season as well.

Due to his short Bomber tenure I was expecting onlt maybe a moment of silence, the class ooozes out of Sports #1 organization.

A great honor for his wife and kids and for all of Baseball! I'm sure Lidle must be proud "somewhere" to have worn those Pinstripes, even if it was for such a short time!

Due to his short Bomber tenure I was expecting onlt maybe a moment of silence, the class ooozes out of Sports #1 organization. You make good point. I could understand the first pitch, definitely a moment of silence, but the black arm band...eh. That maybe should be reserved for the likes of The Mick and Joe D. But hey, it's cool.

I think they're casting the armband as a two-fer, with Lidle and Hank Bauer, who passed shortly after Cory.

I'm with J-Rem here. Lidle was a Yankee for about 5 minutes. I know it's not the most popular opinion here, but I do think the Yankees sometimes do a bit of grandstanding. Honoring Lidle as if he were a cornerstone to the Yankee Dynasty of the '90s is an example of that. It's great to honor Hank Bauer. But honoring Corey Lidle is a head-scratcher.

I might agree if the circumstances varied. But this franchise still feels the wounds from Thurman Munson's accident. To have another player lost in a private plane crash uncovers old wounds. I think every one of us thought about that within seconds of hearing about Lidle's fate; I'm sure George did too. He's not getting a plaque. His wife is throwing out the first pitch.

...it's the armbands that seems a bit much to me.

... and I havn't seen anything mentioning Hank. OTOH, he was on the current roster, so we did have a fallen teammate... I could go both ways on this. Knuckle's point on Thurm is spot on... first thing I thought of.

to be honest, the first thing I thought of was "I hope he was alone" (thinking what if Jeter, AROD Posada, Mariano- was with him)...then I thought of Thurm.
