Does anyone here not want the Yanks to go for him? I know I think they should. But I'm skeptical that he'll be stud both on the mound and the bat long term. Eventually one skill will diminish as the other emerges as the dominant one. It's not like guys haven't tried before in the minors and didn't make it. Hitters have reinvented themselves as a pitcher and vice versa, but never at the same time. There's a reason for that. Even the Babe never did it at the same time long term, although there was no DH. Sure, he could be a once in a couple lifetimes talent but I wouldn't count on that. Still want the Yanks getting him though as he could pan out on either side or hopefully both.

Before we speculate on what is or isn't possible let's see the guy play ...and yes I want him

All in, as pitcher
All in, as hitter
All in, as both

All in, as pitcher or hitter
Not at all in, on both
Concession, he can DH on the days he pitches

I don't see why it's a problem to be all in on both to start. Especially to see which one plays better in the bigs (or if both can). Just need the realization that it's likely he won't be able to sustain both.

Hey, get him, see what kind of hitter he is, see what kind of pitcher he is. If he can do both well, put him in the rotation and have him DH 3-4 times a week. If he is clearly better at one or the other, use him at that.

I agree with most here about getting him and seeing where he fits best (either or both). Judging his pitching prowess in advance is a little easier because his velocity, control, movement, etc., can all be measured and compared to ML talent and reasonable predictions can be made.
Hitting is a little different, because it doesn't necessarily account for the quality of pitching he regularly faces -- not saying that it's lousy, just that I don't know how consistently good it is.
The guy appears to be the real deal, but he is yet to prove it on the highest competitive level there is. Aren't the Japanese leagues a little 4A-ish? Not taking anything away from him, but let's get him over here and see how he hangs with the best in the game. He might indeed shine.

Japanese League is a mixture of players with MLB level skills and AAA players. AAAA isn’t a good description to describe the talent level and competition.

Players with MLB skill levels that cannot get a contract in MLB, so either their skills have diminished or were never quite there enough to hang-on in the States.

Most don’t want to leave their home country. If they couldn’t play why do MLB teams scout Japan all year long? Costly to do so.

I think he's talking about the Americans that go over there. Some of which dominate. Tuffy Rhodes anyone?

Magnum PI went over there when Big Hurt took his job on the Yanks and could have broke the record of consecutive games with a HR. But with 2 outs in the 9th, down a run and bases loaded, he bunted to the approval of the front office as it was the smart play.

Yes! Wonder if Tanaka staying has anything to do with is...or if it helps our cause.
