He may not get as much "both ways" action as he wants, but he'll get some is my guess. He is a unique talent. He'll make it a strong point of negotiation so, unless his ML team renegs, he might indeed get what he wants. I can see P + DH, as long as he can earn his way into both roles. Let's see that stroke of his against the top pitching in the game. Remember, with Cashman, old paradigms are going out the window. It is so challenging for both hitters and pitchers to maintain a high level of performance, with daily or near daily workouts required for both. The line between success and failure is fine. Plus there needs to be some recovery time. I could see Otani pitching every 5th day and DHing maybe once during off days...but for him to play every day with a start coming every 5th...I cannot imagine any MLer pulling that one off successfully these days.

He didn’t play the day before his scheduled starts.

After 20 years of Jeter NY media will have no problem dealing with that.

ORLANDO, Fla.—While Brian Cashman wouldn't address Shohei Otani directly—given that he's still under contract in Japan—the Yankees GM did address the possibility of having a two-way player on his roster.
"Generally, if you have someone capable of doing something like that, it gives you more roster flexibility and roster choices," Cashman said Monday at the GM Meetings. "It's kind of like having a 26th man when everyone else is playing with 25, just because of the duality of that particular player.

Look how much trouble we had with the Judge's Chambers. We're a bunch of old -- and aging -- codgers, trying to deal.

Hear what you're saying but this is a little different. The player holds the cards. If his demand is to pitch and hit you have to accommodate in some way or you won't get him. Not to say it's an unreasonable demand, he's young and has shown the ability to do both at a high level, I wouldn't blame him one bit if those are his terms to sign with any team. Can't wait to see how it pans out, very much hope in pinstripes.

youtu.be/3B05dBnrN1oMeet next years unamous rookie of the year. Ohtani looks like Matsui as a hitter and even better as a pitcher. The only thing that scares me is his base running. He runs down the first base line like a larger version of Gardy. You would hate to lose an ace for the playoffs due to a rolled ankle. Ohtani’s addition to this core would be a scary proposition to MLB. I smell a dynasty. Now go get him Cash!

He’s a very fast runner. Correct English spelling is Otani. Jimbue can explain it to you.

Look how much trouble we had with the Judge's Chambers. We're a bunch of old -- and aging -- codgers, trying to deal. Actually, old school (like me) has no problem with the guy playing both ways. It’s the 21st century world of pampered overpaid athletes that would limit this guy’s workload.

He’s a very fast runner. Correct English spelling is Otani. Jimbue can explain it to you. He is fast and hustles down the line, but scares me the way he bangs into the bag. You would hate to lose a Cy Young caliber pitcher for the playoffs due to a twisted ankle. I’ve always seen his name as Otani, but recently I’ve seen corrections to Ohtani. I’m going regret this, but Jimbue, what’s the official explanation ?
