Yep, and I can give you the date - it was May 31, 1964 at Shea Stadium. A famous doubleheader between the Mets and Giants in which the nightcap went 23 innings. In the 14th inning, Jesus Alou and Willie Mays reached base with none out. Orlando Cepeda was up, and on a 3-2 pitch, the Giants started the runners. Cepeda lined to Roy McMillan at short. McMillan stepped on second to retire Alou and could easily have tagged Mays for an unassisted triple play, of which there have been so few in major league history, but he threw the ball to Kranepool (I believe) for the third out. Met fans cheered like crazy, but I was railing at McMillan for throwing the ball instead of tagging Mays. The Giants, as you may remember, won in 23 innings. Trivia question - who was the winning pitcher with 10 innings of scoreless relief? A big name - may have been a rookie at the time. Gaylord? Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Nice job, Ripper.

My one and only Stadium game I've talked about here before, June 67, we sat somewhat down the right field line, not too far back from Mickey though at first base.

Hey Left, speaking of Willie Horton, do you have any particular memories of him?

I posted something up here a few days ago, but it's not here somehow. I must have messed up. I always thought of Willie Horton and Gates Brown as mirror images of each other, sionce Gates hit lefty and Willie righty and both were really good hitters.
No particular memories of Willie - just number 23 for Detroit, a good power-hitting left fielder. He hurt us on occasion, but no specific memories of him beating us with a HR, or anything like that.

Off the wall question Left...
did you ever attend a game where any player was on a fairly long hitting streak, and if so, did he keep it going?

I was at a Nats-Braves game at RFK Stadium - guessing it was 2006 - can try to find it - Matt Diaz of the Braves had gotten 10 consecutive hits, including 4 in this game - but in his 5th at-bat that evening, the Nats got him out on a grounder to short. Chipper Jones may have hit 3 HR's in this game, by the way. In his second at bat, he flied out to the fence. I was happy at the time, but then realized I could have seen him hit four in a game! I can't recall attending a game with a Pete Rose-type streak on the line. Found it: www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2006/B08140WAS2006.htm

Hey Left, this was posted on another forum yesterday.....
A little help; searching for a particular game.
"This isn't a trivia challenge as much as me trying to remember a special night 57 years ago. I was seven years old and a friend took me and his nephew to a twilight double header (they don't seem to have them any more). It was the Polo Grounds 1962 or 1963. The Mets dropped both games to the Giants and I remember it being special for the kid I was with because he was a Willie Mays fan and Mays had a HR that night. The problem is, in using the Baseball Reference web page I am having a difficult time figuring out which games I saw.
I am an old man now and want to be able to say I saw Willie Mays hit one out, at the Polo Grounds, and then be able to back it up.
So here is the trivia part: that night they had an old timers game between the Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers (Obviously no Mets). The Rifleman Chuck Connors even appeared, came running from the dug out with his Winchester and shot dead a Giant at first base. That I remember perfectly; great stuff when you're seven.
Anyone have any idea when that old timers game was played? It was either '62 or '63, I am certain it was a double header and pretty sure Mays hit one out."
Any memories of that?

I went to a Mets-Giants double header at the Polo Grounds in 1962, Rip - it was a Saturday afternoon - Mets got smashed in opener and lost close game in nightcap, 6-4, on a two-run HR by Harvey Kuenn in the ninth. Mets had tied in 8th when Elio Chacon scored from second base when the Jints were unable to turn a 6-4-3 double play. That was really exciting. I think Joe Christopher made a great catch robbing Orlando Cepeda of extra bases. Jay Hook lost opener to Jack Sanford, I think. Maybe 9-1. Mets run scored as a result of a Mays error! A single by Richie Ashburn went through Willie's legs for a two base error, and Richie subsequently scored.
That was NOT the twin bill referred to in your question. So I'm thinking it was likely in 1963 - but I do not recall the old timers game. I'll have to look on Retrosheet.

Hey, Rip, I believe my first game at Yankee Stadium was in September of 1957 - Yanks ended up losing to the hated Red Sox in extra innings. I have posted about this game a few times. First off, the worst thing was that both Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle were injured and did not play. Would have been the only time I saw Teddy in person. My oldest brother took me to the game, along with his fiancee and my twin brother. The fiancee's parents lived on The Grand Concourse in the Bronx, literally a five minute drive from the Stadium. The Yanks got off to an early lead behind Bobby Shantz, 3-0, I believe - but the Sox came back and tied the game, and it went to extries. But early in the game there was a rain delay - and for some bizarre reason, my brother chose to take us back to that apartment on the Grand Concourse to wait out the delay. When the tarp was coming off, we headed back to the Stadium and saw the rest of the game. Well, most of it. My twin brother and I were still seven years old, and we had to leave before the game was completed because it was late. My brother drove us back to Spring Valley, and it was not until the next morning that I learned the Red Sox had won on a HR by a back-up catcher named Pete Daley. I think the final score was 5-3. I'll get the box score and account from Retrosheet. I can tell you that Gene Stephens played LF instead of Teddy Ballgame. Shantz, a great fielding pitcher, made an error that helped the Sox get even. Can't remember too many more details. I think Frank Malzone had a big hit for Boston. Here it is: www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1957/B09040NYA1957.htmI see we made a great comeback to tie in the ninth, but blew a golden chance to win it. I had long since left.
