Pineda trade was expected to be a long term positive so they make that trade Andy or no Andy. Possibly they don't make that trade if they saw enough out of Jesus over 200+ At Bats and 25+ games catching.

so...and hindisght is 20/20 blah blah blah (although i'd STILL make the trade for Pineda even knowing he'd need surgery)
but...if they didnt make that trade they couldve enterted this season with a rotataion of
CC Kuroda Nova Hughes Garcia/ Pettitte
and Montero as the C/DH
is that better, worse, the same as
CC Kuroda Nova Hughes Garcia/Pettitte
and no Montero but Ibanez as the DH?
i think this season it is no doubt better to have Ibanez...but as their careers unfold itll be interesting to follow Pineda and Montero

Yanks wouldn't have signed Garcia if Andy was returning.

Anyone else glad to see that Freddy has been given the LaTroy Hawkins chair in the bullpen, you know, the one where you sit in the corner and be quiet and invisible until we call you?
A few times this week I was afraid Joe might use him when we were up a few, like Saturday.
Gotta be a blowout one way or the other, or extra innings when we run out of arms.

I kinda wish he had replaced Rapada when Clay couldn't find the strike zone in the ninth. Rapada did get a bad break on the hit off his glove and ensuing throwng error.

Rapada is awful. The sooner he is off the team the better.

John, I understand your frustration. There's a lot to what you say. I can only guess what Cashman's reasoning was, but I suspect the Yankees had already reached a decision last year that Montero wasn't their catcher of the future. They based this on the reports of their minor league coaches who had worked with Montero. They didn't need to see him in the majors. In fact, they didn't want to give him too much exposure as a ML catcher for fear of lowering his trade value.
I also think that their decision was more nuanced than just can he catch in the major leagues, yes or no. My guess is that they probably thought he could play the position, but that he would never be a good enough defensive catcher to deal with a team with a really good running game. So, while he might do OK most of the time during the regular season, he would get exposed in a playoff series like the one with Texas in 2010. I think the Yankees really want to avoid another series like that and place a premium on defense for their catchers. That's why they love Russell Martin even though he's not much of a hitter.
As I say, just my own speculation. But it's the only thing that makes sense to me given that this was at least the fourth time they tried to trade Montero.

Odds are greater Montero goes to the All Star Game as a Catcher before any Yankee catcher does.

Russell Martin was an all-star in 2011.

Russell Martin was an all-star in 2011. does that count? No. He's hit about .200 since that selection.

"Read my Lips", Russell Martin will come out of this slump and go on a tear that will put smiles on our faces. I will bring this up again in 6 weeks.

That does not change history. He had solid numbers when chosen to represent the AL in the 2011 All Star game.
Of course, I'm rooting for effjay's call. I have expressed concern at what looks like a diminished (which is not to say out of shape – no fat on him) body since I first saw Martin in Tampa.
