Kevin Youkilis says ‘there’s definitely a chance’ he’ll return to Yankees this season 'I feel good,' Youkilis, sporting a Brooklyn Nets baseball cap, said Monday. The 34-year-old had back surgery June 20 to repair a herniated disc after playing in only 28 games this season. BY CHRISTIAN RED / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2013, 12:10 Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis has surgery on a herniated disc June 20. These days, Yankee fans can use every bit of positive news they can get, especially when it comes to the sinkhole that is third base. Less than 24 hours after the team announced Alex Rodriguez would hit the disabled list – again – rehabbing Kevin Youkilis told the Daily News Monday “there’s definitely a chance” he will return to the Bombers this season. “I feel good,” Youkilis, sporting a Brooklyn Nets baseball cap, said before heading to his physical therapist in midtown. The 34-year-old had back surgery June 20 to repair a herniated disc after playing in only 28 games this season. Youkilis is batting a paltry .219 with two homers and 8 RBI overall for 2013. He was signed to a one-year, $12 million deal in the winter to be A-Rod’s replacement, but the back injury scuttled those plans. Youkilis was expected back after an estimated 10 to 12 weeks following the procedure. Youkilis’ agent, Joe Bick, told The News that his client was advised by Dr. Robert Watkins – who performed the surgery on Youkilis – to rest for approximately three weeks following the surgery. “He was only allowed to start his rehab work two weeks ago,” said Bick. “He came back to New York before the All-Star Game. So far, so good.” Bick said Youkilis goes to physical therapy daily, and although it is “early in the process” of the player’s rehab, “he is doing everything he can to get out there as soon as possible.” After Youkilis went down, the Yankees have paraded numerous players out onto the field to man third – from David Adams to Luis Cruz to Brent Lillibridge and even Vernon Wells – none of whom have conjured images of George Brett, Graig Nettles or even A-Rod. Now, if only the Bombers can stay in playoff contention, Youkilis might be able to provide a spark late in the regular season should he return. “It’s our anticipation that’s going to happen,” Bick said of Youkilis suiting up this season again. “That’s what we’re hoping.” Read more: www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/chance-youk-back-yanks-article-1.1406640#ixzz2Zt4maqZl

The Yankees may as well have taken $12 mil and flushed it. What a joke.

Youkalis playing again this season? I would not bet the house on that. $12M up in smoke.

@tyradioguy: Curtis Granderson: 0-for-2, line-out, K, BB, run. Jayson Nix: 0-for-2, 2 pop-outs, BB, run. #Yankees @tampayankees.

Even with all the Ks, Grandy would be a huge boost for this offense.
Nix? Not so much. But he's a better 3B than Lillibridge.

AUG 25 Prospect Injury Notes: Banuelos throwing BP, Austin close to game action By Mike Axisa
Via Chad Jennings: LHP Manny Banuelos has been throwing batting practice at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa. He had Tommy John surgery last October. According to Mike Dodd’s classic TJS rehab article, Banuelos should begin pitching in game action relatively soon. I suppose he could make some winter ball starts after the season if the team is comfortable with his rehab. The 22-year-old made just six starts last year before hurting his elbow, so he’s missed nearly two full developmental years. I ranked Banuelos as the team’s 12th best prospect last month.
In other prospect injury news, OF Tyler Austin could be close to playing in games with the team’s Rookie Level Gulf Coast League affiliate. He’s been out since mid-July with a bone bruise in his right wrist. The GCL season ends this coming Thursday — the other leagues end the following week — so there aren’t a whole lot of games left to play this year. I do think Austin is a prime Arizona Fall League candidate, however. Before the injury, he was hitting a disappointing .254/.344/.367 (101 wRC+) with six homers in 358 plate appearances for Double-A Trenton. I ranked Austin as the club’s fourth best prospect last month.

Injury updates on some Yankees you might have forgotten about: Zoilo Almonte and Travis Hafner are progressing to tee-and-toss. They’re both expected to rejoin the team after rosters expand Sept. 1. Also, Michael Pineda has moved up to side sessions and David Phelps is about to start throwing again. There’s still a shot of them helping the Yanks out of the bullpen this year. Girardi didn’t have much info about Vidal Nuno and didn’t seem to feel like he was an option to help in September.
Girardi needs to read Behind the Bombers. He'd know Nuno is fully healed.

Hafner was seen at the A&P buying ribs for Casey McGehee's Labor Day Grillfest.

I'm so excited that Travis Hafner may rejoin the team in Sept. Will he replace Wells as the designated automatic out?

@mcculloughsl: Speaking of ankle injuries, Brian Cashman says he still has not been cleared to run.
