I mean, Kentucky Derby...but if Bellamy Road doesn't win the race, Big Stein is gonna mount Joe Torre like his prized horse and start putting the boots to him...
This has dipped beyond a slow start, below a disappointing beginning, and under an "early season slump"...we are officially at critical mass with our core temperature rising.
Are we done? of course not, to think so is silly. But our cooling water systems are down and I'm not sure we can reverse the trend...."Dammit, Jim I'm just a doctor not a nuclear physicist!"
Klapsich had an interesting article where he mentioned the Yankees might DL Giambi in order to make room for Sturtze. I would assume that would only happen if Henn is so good he sticks around and Brown is "released." His 1.90 ERA the year before we got him- was that in simulated games? Henn has options so I gotta believe he goes no matter what he does up to and including a perfect game while striking out 27 on 81 pitches.
It appears the free agent slump has hit us. Too many years of doing what had to be done to upgrade the big team by trading away chips at the deadline and then relying on the next FA class to reload. It is the typical MO for any team in contention for as long as we have been...but it's here- no shame in it...but how to get out. I have a plan...anyone listening, or is it too late? I should alert you I began drinking Jack Daniels on the rocks around the time Kevn F. Brown shoulda (the middle of the 1st)...Our season is at a crossroads- two things can happen...we bounce back, this becomes a bad dream and Cashman is viewed a genius for pulling the right strings when he needed too. Or, we continue to muddle along and find ourselves 55-55 at the trade deadline.
If we bounce back and this becomes a bad dream...
we enter the post-season doing what has to get done to win it NOW. meaning, we trade whomever to get Clemens and Griffey for one more push. Recognizing it'll set us back ten years in our rebuilding.
If we are at 500 at the deadline and are at least 10 back in the wild-card...
we become "sellers." Need a proven veteran starter for your teams push? Mussina- available! It'll cost you just a few high level prospects.
example: Mussina for Jorge Julio and AA IF prospect.
Need some bullpen help? Gordon, Quantrill, Groom, Stanton- ALL Available!! It'll cost you some low level prospects.
example: The Yankee pen for a AAA closer, and maybe an A OF prospect.
Need some veteran Infield help? Sanchez, Womack, Tino- available!
example: Tino and Womack and Eric Duncan for Joe Crede
Need a vetera catcher? Posada- Available! It'll cost you some high level prospects.
example: Posada for Damaso Marte (Chisox)
Need a big bopper? Sierra and Sheffield- available! They'll cost you!
example: Sheffield and Sierra for Casey Kotchman and Scot Shields (Angels)
Basically there will be six untouchables- Jeter, Mariano, Johnson, Pavano, Matsui, and AROD. Not a bad core.
So, we're able to dump all of what we "had." We begin the rebuilding process...and we do it in a NY Minute!
Jeter goes to CF- thanks for everything. You're already the greatest SS in yankee history nd hall of famer. But, now you're needed elsewhere.
AROD to SS- Jeter's label of our greatest SS in history just got lost.
Matsui to LF- resigned for market value, say $9MM per for 4.
Sign AJ Burrnett as FA, Wang sticks. Rotation becomes RJ, Pavano, Burnett, Wang, <insert name of prospect from our deadline trades here- or Make Shields a starter>.
Bullpen- Mariano anchors, Sturtze, Jorge Julio, Scot Shields, Marte, and fill in names of "propects" we got at deadline.
1b- Kotchman
2b- Cano
ss- AROD
3b- Crede
LF- Matsui
CF- Jeter
RF- sign a FA to a short-term deal until Mitch Jones is ready...Delucci? etc.
C- sign a Molina (anyone of em) to a 2 year deal.
DH- Giambi? (if he can) if not- FA.
Johnson
Pavano
Burnett
Shields
Wang
Mariano
Sturtze
Julio
Marte
Proctor
Bean
bench: backup C, Sanchez, Crosby, FA
This isn't desperation...just bourbon insomnia. Far-fetched yeah. But, it was fun to guess what the Yankees could land if they were sellers at the deadline.
Of course, Plan A is best- turn on a switch and start dominating again just like every year the past 10!
