No, I’m not going to ask that question because it’s so hard to develop an agreed upon criteria or consensus. Rolling stone compiled a list that got a great deal of criticism (sponsored by Apple Music). One critic from “The New Oxford Review” made an well thought out critique and then concluded that King David of Israel was the best (obviously he his one who values the lyrics over the tune)
I will put out a few different trivia questions on who different famous songwriters thought were the best.
Interestingly, some songwriters writer never seemed to answer the question.
Joni Mitchell is an interesting character. She considered herself a painter who wrote songs. She said she was never satisfied with finished songs, because she always felt there was a note or word she should have changed. She compared this to her paintings, which she thought were perfect and did not need an additional stroke. My opinion is she didn’t realize her lack of finality with her music demonstrated her genius, similar to Leonardo da Vinci never feeling he finished the Mona Lisa.
