My mother always told me you never go out to eat on Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, because restaurants are crowded, the menu is often reduced, and the experience is not usually the restaurant’s best.
For my first marriage (28 years) went out almost every year for both.
Tonight, wife and I are going out for Valentine’s Day to a Greek restaurant that comes highly recommended. I did look at making a reservation February 14 or 15, by they had an extremely reduced, price-fixed menu. My wife said, “remember what your mom taught you “

I agree with your mother and would certainly add New Year's Eve to the short list of dates to avoid restaurants.
