There were 2 ML players who had almost the same names. One letter makes a difference.
Names means what they were known in the majors, not necessarily they given names. For example Babe Ruth, not George Herman Ruth
Of course, about many pairs of players this can be said, so few more informations.
Let's name them A and B.
A was in the majors from 1950s to 1970s. B - from 1960s to 1980s.
B had more ML seasons than A.
They have never been teammates.
Name these players.
BAMN
In case of more than one correct answer, I reserve myself the right to accept only one I have in mind.

I immediately thought of Ron Fairly and Jim Fairey, but I assume we're counting first names here, so they don't work. Let me continue to think about it. The players are from a good time era for me.

Can you give us the teams, Zbi, or is that too much of a hint? I would promise not to research the teams - just try to run players in my mind to see if I hit on the right guys.

I gave up early on this one because of your clue that it might not be their given name, like Babe Ruth. I searched on common nicknames that players are known by (e.g. Doc, Tex, etc) and couldn’t find anyone. Both Lee’s use their given name, though Lee is actually Maye’s middle name.

Without my looking it up, was Lee Maye's first name "Arthur?"

Somehow that just stuck in my mind, Two Cents. I'd be prouder if I had solved the question. When I saw your answer, I recognized it - but doubt I'd have gotten that on my own no matter how long I thought about it.
