The things you learn. Roy White scouted Matsui when he was a kid. He submitted to the Yankees a report saying they should sign him if he becomes available. Yesterday, the @baseballhall held a press conference at Yankee Stadium to discuss the newly-announced plans for an exhibit which will explore the history of transpacific exchange of baseball between the U.S. and Japan. Yankees and NPB Alumni Hideki Matsui and Roy White both spoke during the event 👏

Never knew Roy scouted 'Zilla, but it's cool and makes so much sense.
Two of the classiest Yankees ever! Love them both!!

Did Roy ever hold an FO position as opposed to special adviser?

Met Roy at the Stadium a couple of years ago. As gentlemanly a man as you would expect

I was at the Stadium in September, 1965 for Roy White's major league debut. It was a weekday doubleheader matinee vs. Baltimore. The games were not televised for some bizarre reason, so I went with a friend. We lost both ends, but Roy hit a two-RBI single in his first big league at-bat, pinch-hitting late in the game off Dave McNally (thus batting righty). He started the nightcap at second base, batting lefty off some righty Oriole pitcher, and he went 2-5 with a double. He instantly became a favorite of mine, and I predicted greatness for him. He never became a superstar, but he was a wonderful player for us for years. And always remained one of my favorites.

Was Roy White the one who was getting interviewed by phone while he was driving and gets pulled over then tells the cop he's talking to George to get out of it? The whole thing was heard on air. Probably early 2000s, thought it was him. Was hilarious whoever it was though.
