By Michael Gluskin / MLB.com
The Yankees are red-hot, having won five straight and nine of their last 10 games. The five-game winning streak ties a season best, and has helped put New York in first place in the American League East by one game over the Red Sox.
Fresh off a 5-1 homestand, the Yankees started their six-game road trip with a win Friday night at Baltimore. New York has won five of seven versus the Orioles this year, and has not lost a season series against the Orioles since 1997.
Mike Mussina has won his last five decisions, including a win Sunday against the Devil Rays. He gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings, striking out eight. Mussina, who spent 10 seasons with Baltimore, is 77-40 with a 3.62 ERA in 154 starts at Camden Yards.
Adam Loewen faces the Yankees for the second time this season. The rookie made his first career start against New York in early June, giving up three earned runs and six hits in five innings. Loewen is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in the second half of the season.
The Yankees have scored at least five runs in each of their last 12 games, winning 10 of those contests. Overall, they are 58-17 when scoring four or more runs.
