Wednesday's game against the White Sox brings another opportunity for Randy Johnson to break out of his second-half slump in the midst of a tight playoff race in both the American League East and the AL Wild Card.
Johnson, who is going for his second win and a .500 record since the All-Star break, earned a no-decision against the White Sox on July 14 after pitching seven innings and giving up only three earned runs.
"The last few starts have been a little spotty," manager Joe Torre said. "The game that he lost when he threw 129 pitches, I thought that was great. Everything was right where we wanted it, and it looked like he had pitched very well to that point since Memorial Day."
That game was July 19 against Seattle when Johnson threw eight innings and only allowed two earned runs, but took the loss when the Mariners scored an unearned run in the eighth.
"Hopefully he's going through a little flat spot," Torre said. "It happens, so hopefully Randy will get back on track tomorrow. I'm not worried about him. Physically, he seems fine."
Johnson will be facing off against Jon Garland, who has not lost since June 8, and a White Sox team that is pumped after their series opening extra inning win on Tuesday.
Pitching matchup
NYY: LHP Randy Johnson (11-9, 5.11 ERA)
Johnson has lost two of his last three decisions, and is 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA since the All-Star break. He pitched against the Orioles last Friday, giving up four runs on nine hits in six innings. Johnson does not have a strikeout in either of his last two starts, the first time he's done that since his rookie season.
CWS: RHP Jon Garland (12-3, 4.99 ERA)
Garland got off to a shaky start in his last outing, Friday against the Blue Jays, but recovered to pick up his 12th win of the season. A three-run home run by Toronto third baseman Troy Glaus to put the White Sox down, 3-0, after the first inning, but Garland allowed just five singles in his next five innings of work. No Toronto batter reached second base after the first inning thanks to three White Sox double plays. The win was Garland's eighth in his last nine starts, and he has a 3.39 ERA since his last loss on June 8.
