Yanks begin set with Angels
Los Angeles (59-56) at New York (67-43), 7:05 p.m. ET
By Leslie Parker / MLB.com
If what goes around comes around, then the Angels should look out for the New York Yankees.
After knocking them out of the playoffs in the 2002 and 2005 ALDS, the Angels took two of three in the opening series of this season from the Bombers and head to the Bronx on Friday to start a four-game series.
"They're never an easy team," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "When I watched them struggle, it surprised me. They are such a fundamentally sound ballclub."
Both teams are in tight playoff races, with the Yankees three games up on Boston in the AL East and the Angels 3 1/2 behind the A's in the AL West.
"Playing in Yankee Stadium brings its own set of challenges," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "You have to pitch well, get into a good zone and you can't let up for the whole lineup," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "They're deep. We have to get into our game and hold our own on the offensive side. We've been playing better ball and we're hoping that will carry over."
The Angels will start one of their rookie phenoms, Joe Saunders, who has not lost a game since he was called up.
New Yankee Cory Lidle will make his second start and hopes to build on the success of his debut. He beat the Blue Jays in New York.
Former Yankee and current Angels left fielder Juan Rivera could pester his former team. He's batting .345 in his last seven games with 10 hits and eight RBIs and is batting .305 with 20 home runs and 64 RBIs on the season.
"Juan Rivera is having a wonderful year," Torre said. "He's done a great job for them. I always thought he would be a good hitter one of these days. He'll swing and miss at a pitch and look terrible, then hit a line drive down the right-field line on the next pitch."
Pitching matchup
LAA: LHP Joe Saunders (3-0, 1.29 ERA)
The success of Angels rookie pitchers continued on Sunday as Saunders won his third start of the season. He handcuffed the Rangers for seven innings and only allowed one hit through five. Saunders finished permitting just three hits and striking out a career-high six batters and worked efficiently once he was given a large lead early in the game.
NYY: RHP Cory Lidle (9-7, 4.59 ERA)
Lidle was very good in his Yankees debut, allowing one run on four hits in six innings on a very hot afternoon in New York. He threw an assortment of pitches, at varying speeds, striking out five and leaving with a comfortable lead as manager Joe Torre decided not to push the 34-year-old right-hander on a 100-degree day.
Player to watch
Tim Salmon is batting .316 against Lidle with a double, a home run and three RBIs.
