Yankees send Lidle to take on Orioles
Baltimore (51-68) at New York (70-46), 7:05 p.m. ET
By Ryan Mink / MLB.com
Cory Lidle has had to wear his belt one notch tighter in recent days. That's because the Yankees pitcher has lost eight pounds since battling a stomach virus for a week.
But Lidle said he feels just about normal and is ready to face the Orioles on Wednesday.
"I don't think it will be a problem," Lidle said. "I'm pretty much going to go normally through 80 pitches, and then I'm going to start monitoring myself and see how the ball's coming out. I hit the wall pretty early [in my last start], but I think that was expected."
Lidle struggled with the virus in his last outing, Aug. 11 against the Angels. He said it made him feel more fatigued and he felt cramps in his lower stomach. Lidle went just four innings, allowing three earned runs and four hits. He threw just 79 pitches.
The Yankees righty said he has just recently been able to start eating normal food, but hasn't been able to eat as much. He also did his bullpen work one day later than usual, and hasn't done any running because he's been trying to rest his body as much as possible.
"He's back to normal," manager Joe Torre said. "He's eating and it's staying where it's supposed to, so we're pretty upbeat about him."
Lidle said he expects Jorge Posada to catch him. The two haven't worked together since Lidle was acquired on July 31, but like everything else, Lidle shrugged it off.
"You take the normal approach," Lidle said. "I just have to follow through as far as execution and see how it goes."
The Yankees, who beat Baltimore, 6-3, in Tuesday night's series opener, will face Baltimore rookie Adam Loewen. Rookie starters have a combined 3.73 ERA and 7-5 record against the Yankees this year. Loewen shut out the Yankees on Aug. 5, going 6 1/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
Pitching matchup
NYY: RHP Cory Lidle (1-1, 3.60 ERA)
Lidle is 4-6 with a 4.82 ERA in his career against the Orioles. His last game against them was on May 22, 2005, when Lidle was with the Phillies. He tossed a complete game, while giving up two runs to earn the win.
BAL: LHP Adam Loewen (2-4, 6.41 ERA)
Loewen baffled the Yankees on Aug. 5, shutting them out over 6 1/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight. The rookie allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings against Boston in his last outing.
Player to watch
Derek Jeter has the most success against Loewen. In two games against the rookie, Jeter is 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
