With 15 pitchers competing for 7 major league spots (once Veras, Leiter, Mendoza, and Myers are officially signed), there is also a staggering amount of competition for the AAA bullpen. Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that Proctor or Leiter wins the 7th ML spot. Leaving those 2 out.... Justin Pope turned 26 1 month ago. Ben Julianel and Charlie Manning turn 27 during the 2006 season. All 3 are ready to move up from AA. The resulting competition for 6 or 7 spots could be: LH--Julianel, Manning, Wayne Franklin, Dusty Bergman (Angels/Giants AAA in 2005/minor league contract) and Matt Smith. RH-- Jason Anderson, Colter Bean, Pope, Kris Wilson, Pete Munro, Veras, and Mendoza. It is time for Munro, Wilson and Franklin to move on, but that still would leave a lot of competition.
What is your take on this, D23??

Sorry I haven't responded. Well first of all, you covered all of the players well. There's no one else I can think of at the moment that could fill in the pen. However, while I don't think it will happen, TJ Beam could be in the mix. But don't be surprise to see former starters converting into reliever roles like Manning and Pope. Because of college experience, we may see Brent Cox sometime in Columbus in the late summer.
I thought I saw that Ben Julianel was picked up by someone via Rule V. I don't think Franklin is on the roster anymore thus Bergman and Smith would probably be in the pen as lefties. Manning a former starter could probably fill in as emergency spot starts if needed. He has moved up the ranks pretty quickly. Munro and Wilson I believe would have to be resigned. I still have not see that we actually signed Veras. Has that been confirmed?
Definitely Justin Pope should be in the pen and probably will be the Clipper's closer.

Veras signing still hasn't been confirmed. I am starting to doubt it will happen. The only player the Yankees lost in rule 5 was OF Eric(?) Andrus in the minor league phase. Ben Himes (womack trade) is probably a similar player. Our prospects have developed to the point that there is no need for the Munro/Wilson/Franklin types.

I checked the Rule V. Yes you're correct, only guy we lost was Erold Andrus. Erold Andrus is a young switch hitter that was around for several years. After several unproductive seasons in low level, it seems he was making progress this season which turned out to be his best season to date. It appeared that the Yankees were waiting for him to groom. He may be one of those late bloomers who was adjusting to switch hitting role...Now Ben Himes, I think had a standout season in AFL.

Don't know if you guys have seen this. It's a couple of months old, but I just came across it. Pinstripes Plus rates the top Yankee and Met relief pitching prospects. There's some interesting info, particularly on J. Brent Cox and Jesse Hoover, who somebody had been asking about in an earlier thread. yankees.scout.com/2/458768.htmlThe article doesn't contain much info on Josh Schmidt, but he was covered in more depth in another article on the Staten Island pitching staff from last year. yankees.scout.com/2/447483.htmlI particularly like the quote of the "Rays scout" (which I assume means a scout for the Devil Rays, although that's not explained). Mental attitude is the most important thing for a Yankee reliever. Sounds like Schmidt has a good one.
