Although there could always be another minor league signing or 2, Columbus is already stacked with pitching competition.
(A couple of Notes--Jason Anderson is out of options , thus not listed..... and some sites report Veras officially signed, others don't).
Rotation:
LH Sean Henn 4-23-81 (shares a 4-23 birthday with
the very-nearly-legendary dg ) 7-6 2.67 85 K
in 111.2 IP in AA/AAA for 2005
RH Scott Proctor 1/02/77 --I like this move.... even
if it is just an attempt to garner trade interest
RH Jorge DePaula 11/10/78 4-2 4.58 90 K in 116
IP in 2005. If DePaula or Proctor are called up
it will be their final year of options.
RH Jeffrey Karstens 9/24/82
RH Matt DeSalvo 9/11/80
RH Steven White 6/15/81
LH Danny Borrell 1/24/79
RH Kris Wilson 8/6/76
The Rotation stacks up much better without retreads May/Voyles/Redding/Munro and Nomo. Hopefully Henn has a monster season.....and I look for him in NY next year either as a #5 starter or as Villone's replacement in the bullpen.
Bullpen:
RH Jose Veras 10/20/80 3.79 24SV 72K in
61.2 IP for Texas AAA team.
LH Dusty Bergman 2/1/78 Angels/Giants AAA
RH Ramiro Mendoza 6/15/72
LH Frank Brooks 9/6/78 Braves AAA
RH Colter Bean 1/16/77
LH Matt Smith 6/15/79
LH Charlie Manning 3/31/79
RH Justin Pope 11/8/79
RH Charlie Isaacson 5/5/80
This is great competition.....with Isaacson, Pope, and Manning needing to move up from AA. I don't know if Mendoza will accept a AAA assignment if he is 100%. He is nice insurance, if healthy....and I love the nostalgia bit, but, as with Kris Wilson, wouldn't be surprised if he is not around due to competition from younger pitchers. Many of the above listed are AAAA pitchers, but with plenty of major league pitching depth... plus everyone on this list being worthy to be at least considered for callup in the event of an injury, Columbus should have a very good staff in 06. I also expect a top prospect or 2 (James Cox??) in Columbus by seasons end. 17 legitimate contenders for the AAA staff isn't a bad problem to have. It can be argued stat Henn, Smith, and White (maybe Karstens??) are the only top 25 prospects on this list......but the list remains a tremendous improvement from 2005.
