:DWith about a week before we go out and try to win #27 it all appears a done deal, that Bernie will not be there in the clubhouse, a part of the Yankees which for the last 17 years or so has been his baseball life. I want to take this opportunity to not only thank him for what he has meant to his dear Yankees, but what he has meant to us, his fans, and his country, Puerto Rico.
Bernie could have signed with another ballclub because in all honesty, although he has lost skills, he has enough still to play another 2 years with another club. But Bernie is a Yankee, and a true Yankee doesn't slap in the face a club which has meant so much to him and even more, his fans. This is really where he stands above anything else that he may have done on the field, which is a lot. Yes, with all those million$ out there and all those teams needing a guy with all his experience, and above all by signing him slapping the Yankee Organization on the face, he has preffered to retire. Yes, Bernie has shown that there's more than just prolonging a career, that there is such a thing as dignity, honor and gratitude to a team that stands out way over the head of any other. There really is where he has excelled once more. Bernie will always be a Yankee, a great one for that matter, but whatever steps he has climbed during his career with the Yankees to be among the best players in it, the steps he has climbed to be in our hearts is greater. Bernie, you have made us proud and in an era where so much ugly stuff has hurt the game, no one, and I mean no one, can say you were not class. No, "Class" doesn't start with a C, it starts with a "B" for Bernie, because that's all you've ever been, Class! One last thing, we will always love you, no matter what!
