Multi-faceted question, I guess. We need to resolve whether it's Phelps or Phillips as the righty first baseman. Phelps has impressed. But whoever wins that, will Doug be sat against tough lefties? We face Kazmir right off the bat, and probably Bedard before the week is out.
Two-for-March or not, I think Doug's our first baseman to start the season, perhaps all year. But I would sit him against guys like that. Does that send the wrong message Opening Day?

No.
IMO, it would send the wrong message to Phelps if Doug started. Assuming Phelps has made the team (it looks as though he has), he needs to play vs. LH's, especially tough ones like Kazmir.

I hink that Doug will play first against RHP and Phelps will play first against the LHP. With Kazmir pitching opening day; Phepls should be our 1B.

Serious question...doesn't Phelps defense suck?
I've never seen the guy but...he sucks right? Phillips is Good...Mankgsdjejdichz is great and Jason is beyond a statue...but Phelps isn't even as good as Phillips correct?
Please set me straight...I mean we got this Manksdfgvicz guy for his D right? Seems funny to sit him because he can't hit in spring training...who cares?

Well, that's what the Phillips/ Phelps thing is all about, right? The Yanks don't platoon a lot, but that is the plan at first, isn't it?
As for Phelps at the bag, I saw him play 4-5 innngs in 5 or 6 games. He did not make any errors, didn't look awkward with his footwork. He doesn't throw like Giambi.
That's the only thing I can tell you. If he was that much of a stiff at first, why are the Yanks giving him so many reps?

I haven't seen much of Phelps, but he looked fine at 1B.
Once the season gets underway, the possibility certainly exists that Torre will give starts to the hot hand regardless of whether a RH or LH is pitching. When we're talking about $2 mil. in salary between 2 players, I don't view it as a problem. I think we'll be OK at 1B this season..... easily better than Wilson/Phillips in 2006.

okay doug m is the first baseman but with tough lefty's like kazmir or bedard the choice is does giambi sit and phelps dh? or does doug sit and phelps play 1b?......whether doug plays or don't play against those type of lefty's will be determined by the play of both doug and phelps.......so in april i would think doug plays and phelps dh's which leaves giambi on the bench.....relax guys!!!....nothing against jason i just think its a way joe can determine down the road what he's got in those players.......the yanks never said they were going to platoon doug and whom ever else won the rh 1b job.......and april is a bit early to switch gears.....doug traditionally has hit lefty's well, he's not a free swinger so i'm not convinced he'll be benched so early based on a poor spring showing......jmo

All Mientkiewicz has been told is that he'll play, but not every day. He told Torre he'll do whatever is asked of him without complaint. I wouldn't view it as a matter of Doug being benched. The Yankees know that Doug isn't a .110 hitter and Phelps isn't a .460 hitter. Had Doug hit .500 this spring, I'd still look for him to hit .270 or so in the regular season. Personally, I'd like to see Giambi at DH with Phelps at 1B vs. Kazmir. Phelps has to prove his value in the regular season and we need Giambi's bat. Phelps needs reps in the field, too. 31 career major league games at 1B isn't much of a history. It would be shocking to see Giambi not in the opening day lineup. Of course....this is assuming that Phelps made the team. Nothing official yet.

Definitely, Josh Phelps opens the season at first esp. vs. an Ace Lefty like Kazmir (and Doug comes in late innings when we have a lead!

that's certainly the popular way to go......but i wouldn't be surprised when jason sits against tough lefty's either ........my opinion is based more on it being april then what will happen later in the season.......i just think joe may want to see exactly what he has......jason is certainly a more proven commodity...

If Jason starts then Melky does DH. That would also be a nice line-up! Phelps would give us more of a long-bomb possibility and Melky will work Kazmir at the plate.

If it's between Doug and Jason sitting against tough lefties, Jason has to play at least at Yankee Stadium. He could easily reach the seats on a pitch where he is fooled.
Of course, Joe will use tendencies against certain pitchers to decide from time to time.
