Berroa has been sent down to AAA (again) by the Royals. His previous demotions were temporary, but, IMO, the ride is over. He makes too many errors and has ZERO patience at the plate. Talented, but seems to lack focus.
KC's new SS: Tony Pena, Jr. , picked up in a recent trade from the Braves.

I love that you carry the Matsui snub like a chip on your shoulder, dg, as do I.
Let's just suppose that DMat has a good year in Boston. I wonder whether there will be significant votes against a "veteran" in other leagues if said vet is not a Yankee.
YANKEE BASEBALL!!!

Matsuii getting "stiffed" on that ROY vote is yet another blatant example by the "media" of ANTI-YANKEE BIAS! Oh!!! I too, remember this fiasco and Berroa getting sent down reminds me again! I'm also still ticked off about this and how they screwed Matsuii. To his credit, I don't think he ever said a negative word about it!!!! And, we shall see about any Dice-K vote this year, Knuckles? Go Yanks! And Jeter should have been MVP last year too!!!!!

Yeah.... 2 awards still anger me: Matsui getting stiffed on the ROY and Guidry not getting the MVP in 1978. If NO pitcher were allowed to win the MVP, I'd be OK with Guidry not getting it, but that's not the case. Jeter was stiffed last season, too. If DMat has even a decent year, the award is his. Ichiro wasn't punished..... that "honor" belongs to Matsui, and Matsui only.

I read some things about Aker long ago, but the KC A's were before my time (young whippersnapper, I know ). I only go back to Patek, Brett, Otis, White, and co. with the Royals.

yf - remember Manny Jiminez?
Of course, all those trades with KC in the late '50's were so productive, getting guys like Bud Daley, Hector Lopez et al. and culminating with the Roger Maris swap.

Another one that still irks is when Tino got stiffed for the GG at 1B by Raffy, who'd played all of 28 games at 1B in 99.

Ichiro wasn't punished..... that "honor" belongs to Matsui, and Matsui only. Amen to that. I would argue that, in 1978, Ron Guidry was not only the most valuable player in the American League, he was the most valuable pitcher that any team ever had for one season. He was 25-3 in a year where the Yankees won the division and made the playoffs by one game -- a "play-in" game which Guidry also won. If Guidry had been only one game worse, i.e., 24-4 (like Clemens was in 1986 when HE won the MVP), the Yankees wouldn't even have made the playoffs. Here's another way to look at it. In games where Guidry didn't get the decision, the '78 Yankees were 75-60, a .556 winning percentage. If you project that over 162 games, you get 90 wins. If they had won 90 games in 1978, the Yankees would have finished tied with Baltimore for third place (behind Boston and Milwaukee). So with Guidry, the Yankees won 100 games and the World Series. Without him, they would have been a third-place team. How much more valuable can any one player be than that?

Very good response, Rags. Those are compelling numbers for giving Guidry the MVP that season.
Friar looked it up, and the MVP went to Jim Rice that year. He did have a great year, too. So it's pretty much of a toss-up. He was third in batting at .331 average, and won the HR (46) and RBI (139) title that season. Both he and Guidry were certainly worthy of winning, but the voters probably gave it to Rice since Gator had his individual award with the Cy Young wrapped-up.

And, FWIW, I agree that Rice was a great player who should be in the HOF. But Guidry was more valuable to the Yankees that specific year (even though Rice also had a great year). What's also interesting is to compare 1978 and 1986, when Don Mattingly had a great year and Clemens was 24-4. Who won the MVP that time? The Red Sox again, of course.
