Saw Mickey Mantle on Dick Cavett Show not long ago, talking about the $100k threshold, and teammates that were key players making 30 -- and everything was one year at a time.

AROD and Cano are both "special players"- both will retire the best to ever play the game at their positions...for guys like that the money and years will always be there...same goes for machado, harper and trout. its the Soriano's, Hampton's, kevin brown's of the world that wont see those paydays anymore You think a team would give Cano 10 years NOW if he were 31 and a FA? I don't. He’ll retire the greatest 2b ever...yes I think he’s get the same deal he got with Seattle- again.

Robbie has admittedly been a great player and is a likely HOFer...but has never led the league in ONE single offensive category (except games played in 2009) and obviously has never been ROY or MVP...and you're gonna already put him ahead of Hornsby, Morgan, Sandberg, Alomar, Lajoie, Carew, Robinson, Gehringer, Biggio? Let's just slow down a little here....he's not even the best in the game.

Hornsby was the GOAT by a wide margin, IMO. His numbers were ridiculous. He won the Triple Crown twice and led the league in BA, OBP, slugging percentage and OPS 7 times, including 6 years in a row. He ranks as not only as the best 2B but one of the greatest players at any position.

Cano is a HOF, no doubt, but Hornsby is easily the best ever. Robbie's top 5, maybe top 3.

Lifetime average of .358, by far the NL record-holder. Not sure how good he was with the glove.

he played too long ago to count...I'm talking modern day 2B- Alomar, Sandberg, Utley, Morgan, Biggio-- Cano is (or will be) better than all of them
if he was back to being a free agent at age 31, yes- he gets $100MM++

How times change, witness this from my January 8 Yankee history:
Of 10 free agents who faced a January 8, 1987 deadline to re-sign with their former clubs or be barred from playing for them until May 1, Ron Guidry and Gary Roenicke were with the Yanks, and Tim Raines, Toby Harrah, and Doyle Alexander would be with the team in different years. The fact that these 10 players received no viable offers from other teams led to the Players’ Association’s first anti-collusion suit against the owners.

His D was not that good and he was hard to get along with, but when you're statistically the greatest RHed hitter who ever lived and the NL's answer to Babe Ruth, who cares? "People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby 1915-1937
pre-1960?
how about pre-1940 when players shared gloves. Ruth, Hornsby, Cy Young- obviously all great but the game was too different to compare modern players with them

ill make it easier...you weren't alive to see him play- only Goodad was...Robinson Cano is the best 2B in the history of the game to NOT leave his glove at his position for the other guy to use. Capiche?

Ruth, Hornsby, Cy Young- obviously all great but the game was too different to compare modern players with them We have been down this path before. You compare players with their peers!!! Let me repeat: You compare players with their peers!!! Hornsby DOMINATED in his era and led the league in......... Hitting - 7 times...2nd greatest BA of all time averaged over .400 for 5 year span...no one has ever surpassed his .424 n 1924 OBP - 9 times SLG - 9 times OPS - 10 times TBs - 7 times 2Bs - 4 times 3Bs - twice HRs - twice RBIs - 4 times Runs - 5 times hits - 4 times Twice a Triple Crown winner...twice won the MVP. His .756 slugging percentage and 1.245 on-base plus slugging set NL records that stood until broken by JUICED Barry Bonds in 2001. Cano has never led the AL in ONE offensive category....no MVPs. Your turn to get the shine box?
