From what I read about the era, most matches were predetermined and the matches were mainly designed to be entertaining Easy to believe, given the evolution that followed. Too bad, because wrestling is a serious sport but is not legitimately practiced beyond the NCAA and the Olympics. I suppose it lacks sufficient mass entertainment value without the theatrics. The real thing is arguably the most athletically demanding sport there is.
