Ski Jumping World Cup competitions were taking part in Lake Placid. However, someone watching this could thing they were taking part in Poland. Only Polish flags and transparents with Polish text among fans.
Fans from Poland visited this place, maybe with an addition of Polish-Americans and Poles living in the USA.
US ski jumpers were taking part in it but absolutely no US flags among fans. Ski Jumping isn't a popular sport in the USA, is it?

Only guy I can name is Jean-Claude Killy, and he was a downhill guy (not a jumper).

When I was a kid, ski jumping was one of our favorite Winter Olympic sports. I guess snowboarding is more “cool” now

I love watching ski jumping. Those people are nuts! Who thought this sport was a good idea?

I went to High School in Saranac Lake, not far from Lake Placid. Those people up there love their winters. Ice Castle on the lake. Judy Carne from Laugh In was the snow queen one year.
I appreciated their love of winter, but I didn't adopt it.

The only ski jumper of note from Northern America I can recall is Horst Bulau from Canada. German name, but he was Canadian and started with successes in 1980s.

I know of Suzanne Chaffee, but only from the Suzie Chapstick commercials. But I think she was also a downhiller and not a jumper.

To say the truth, I'm not a fan of winter sports myself. With the exception of ski jumping.
This sport is very popular in Poland. Thanks to the successes of our ski jumpers. It goes as usual - when there is a success, popularity of sport immediately grows. We had the luck to have some gifted ones in this sport - first Adam Małysz(ended his career some time ago), then Kamil Stoch, Dawid Kubacki and Piotr Żyła.
Alas, these three are at the end of their great careers now. No younger ski jumpers of the same calibre on the horizon now.
It looks like the end of good times ...

I used to like watching downhill skiing, Killy, 2(?) Mahre brothers.
The Saranac Lake Placid influence. We tobogganed hard core.
It snowed October 4, and the ground was white until May.

Unfortunately, about the only time ski jumping gets recognized in the U.S. is during the Winter Olympics. Same with most of the other events. I personally love the winter games because it gives other countries a chance to shine. Norway usually has a strong showing, as do many other countries who aren’t as strong in the summer games.

The Winter Olympics do have some sports that I only have interest in once every 4 years (e.g. bobsledding, curling)

I really got into curling one year. Bocce on ice!
Also, I used to think Luge was kinda funny being an Olympic sport, having gone downhill sledding througout my childhood. Then I came to realize they were going upwards of 90 mph, practically unprotected.
My wife got me watching some figure skating with her. Some pretty amazing things going on there. Done competitively, it not just Icecapades. Amazing athleticism at times.
