I sure wish dyf7 were here to initiate this thread and sustain it as he has always done so well. Come back, Ripper! Beavers are ranked 7th going in! The NCAA baseball season fires up this weekend. In the second weekend series (2/23-25), my ECU Pirates get right into it with a big set against rival UNC. The opener will be in Chapel Hill and the wrap in Greenville sandwiched around a Saturday afternoon game at neutral Fayetteville. Not sure who's the home team for the tweener -- probably the Tar Heels if I had to guess (ECU gets no respect ... no respect at all).
Preseason Polls:
| D1
| Perfect Game
| Baseball America
| NCAA Coaches
| Avg.
of 4 | Oregon State
| 7 | 9 | 5 | 7 | 7.00 | Virginia | 14 | 10 | 10 | 11 | 11.25 | East Carolina
| 11 | 17 | 14 | 12 | 13.50 | North Carolina
| 15 | 14 | 17 | 15 | 15.25 |
Unfortunately, Liberty and VA Tech did not crack the top 25, but it's a long season. Wake Forest starts as the consensus #1. Good luck to everyone's team (except UNC for one series). Let the games begin!

Glad you’re picking up the slack. Filling dyf7‘s shoes is a challenge. I’m sure hoping he comes back with a happy adventure to share.

What 2 cents said.
Hoping Hoos can have a great season. The potential is there.

I’m going to watch Wake Forest play. Seeing them play UNC on 3/30 and Liberty on 5/14. Should be a good time with my boys.

Are you sure? Clemens was fading fast. Bonds reportedly started juicing in 1998. He couldn’t have been HoF without it.

Are you sure? Clemens was fading fast. Bonds reportedly started juicing in 1998. He couldn’t have been HoF without it. Bonds already had over 400 home runs and led the league in OPS for 5 years. He wasn’t going to fall of the Earth and would have most likely been a first year HOFer Assuming the same start for Clemens, he had already won 4 CYA’s. i’m not condoning the use of steroids, but it was MUCH more widespread than MLB acknowledges. Steroids were readily available when I was in high school in 1973-1976. Even then they were known to be dangerous, but some of the best athletes were always trying to get the edge. Fortunately (?) I was never tempted since no amount of steroids was going to make me an MLB player 😞

Returning four starting infielders from their 2023 roster, the Hokies are one of six Division I programs nationally that produced ranked preseason players at four or more infield positions (joining the likeness of Arkansas, Florida State, North Carolina, Oregon State and Vanderbilt)
Now pitching, that’s a different story. A staff of unknowns 😟

Hoos won their opener Friday vs. Hofstra - but it was a squeaker, 10-8. I'm disappointed it wasn't on ESPN+. I watched the highlights on U-Va's athletics page.

Catching up in this thread ... ECU had an easy weekend opener vs. Rider U and they made the most of it, combining for composite scoring of 30-2 over the 3-game set, including shutouts in the last two games. Now the challenge begins as they face a very tough Campbell team on the road before heading to Chapel Hill to start a weekend series against UNC. Campbell has given ECU fits in recent years. They play each other 3 games each season, but they are always three midweek single games and, last year, the Camels swept the season series with three thrilling but frustrating one-run victories. I hope the momentum from hosting Rider will carry ECU through the next four games.

My grandson Zack will be attending Marietta college in the fall and playing baseball there for Brian Brewer and his Pioneers. Zack was recruited by him and I know it’s only division III but it’s a great opportunity for him we all think. It’s a good college in a nice town Marietta Ohio, along the Ohio River. He’s a real good student too. Brian Brewer has been very successful in his twenty years as coach there. His head assistant is Chris Tekulve, son of Kent Tekulve of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Zack has been out there with his parents a few times and has met with Brian and has also communicated with him by email.. He likes to play baseball and with this school he thinks he will have the opportunity to play more than trying to walk on with a division I school. And he has never received any scholarship in baseball. He’s a good outfielder. He has been out for open house weekend and roomed with a couple of the baseball players. They work on their skills year round and weight training too. They have very nice indoor facilities. They say that the big thing for the community there is supporting the baseball team. When he met with coach Brewer one time, Brewer told him that he “yells a lot”. Maybe that’s why he has been successful. I guess that’s a good thing. But it looks like that Zack will be playing with a good group of coaches to give him the best possible opportunity to be successful. Time will tell. pioneers.marietta.edu/sports/baseball

Thank you. The only thing that he lacks at is height and that is hereditary. He’s 5’10” and 170 pounds. But he has played baseball, football and wrestled in high school. And at 18, it is doubtful that he will grow anymore.

At least that is how he feels. And at 18, it is doubtful that he will grow anymore. He’s taller than Jose Altuve and he sure has been good enough to make me miserable.

Grrrr. ECU dropped a Tuesday night game at Campbell again by one run, with the Camels scoring two in the bottom of the 8th to flip the lead. ECU got a lead-off walk in the 9th and sac bunted him into scoring position -- I understand why, playing for the tie, but I also hated the idea of giving away one of only three precious outs remaining for them. Sure enough, they failed to get the needed base hit, and that was all she wrote.
Gotta give credit where it's due. Every time ECU scored, including in the 8th, Campbell came back in their half to cancel it out. Clutch work on their part. I hope they don't get into the Pirates' heads, like they might be getting into mine. Onward and upward to Chapel Hill (geographically and otherwise).

And it is great that it's a Marietta baseball community, he should love that. The town here is like that, and it's nice to see the team jerseys on the fans in the restaurants, etc., and the folks talking baseball and, of course, the great crowd support in the stands. I hope Zack soaks it all in -- I'm sure he will. Keep us posted!

Thanks, also the college has a junior varsity baseball team where most all of the freshmen play unless they are good enough to make the varsity team from the start of their freshman year. That way they get a lot of playing time. They play other division III colleges who have junior varsity teams. Marietta college carries a roster of 47 players. Division I can carry only 35 but division III has no roster limitations .

The best thing is whatever gets him a lot of reps on top of good coaching. I'm happy for him (and for gramps!).
