Sounds great for Zack!
Virginia won its fourth straight to open the season - beat a very good Old Dominion team in C'ville yesterday by 8-0. We have a first year first baseman named, believe it or not, Henry Ford. He was very highly rated as a HS senior, and he's off to a very good start. I guess you could say he's a Model T eammate. The puns about him will be never-ending, I suppose.
We're in a tourney in Jacksonville this weekend - play good teams - Wichita State on Friday, Iowa on Saturday and Auburn on Sunday,

Congrats to Tarheel's boys, taking the series opener from ECU in Chapel Hill by a 2-1 score. Routine fly ball in the 2nd was lost in the twilight and landed 20 ft. behind our outfield for a double and that guy ended up scoring. But the winner was a legit solo jack in the 8th. Overall, a pretty good game. On to Fayetteville for game 2.

We won our first game in the Tourney in Jacksonville yesterday - 5-4 in 10 innings. Wichita State got a solo HR in the top of the 10th, 4-3, but we loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, and Henry Ford hit a fly ball off the wall in RC for a walk-off two-run double.
We play Iowa today at 5:00. Fortunately, Caitlin Clark will not be playing against us.

We had a huge comeback win against Iowa - they scored six in the bottom of the first to go up 6-0, but we bounced back to win 12-9. Another nice win on Sunday vs. Auburn, whom we beat 6-4. So we're off to a 7-0 start. I see on the sked that we play at George Washington on March 6th. GW plays their home games in Arlington, VA (or at least used to) - I will try very hard to attend that game if possible. I have two doctor visits sked that day - both, ironically, not far from the stadium.

The ECU-UNC weekend series ended with a doozy. UNC had won the opener on Friday in Chapel Hill, with ECU rebounding on Saturday in neutral Fayetteville. Game 3 of the traveling series was in Greenville on Sunday and ECU looked in good shape with a 4-0 lead after 5, but UNC scored five runs over the next two innings to pull ahead. What followed was one lead change after another as each half-inning ensued, with the teams combining to tally 13 runs over the last three innings. ECU managed to come out on the winning end of the 10-9 final score, but largely because they got to bat last. As a side note, one of the Tar Heel pitchers, named Matthew Matthijs, entered Sunday's game in the 6th and was charged with three ER in the late-innings melee, but he also pitched in Game 1 and got that win. I mention Matthew because, although now pitching for Carolina Blue, he grew up in Greenville, rooting for the Pirates, and he graduated from high school there. He also starred on the mound for the Greenville Little League team that went to Williamsport in 2017. There, he substantially contributed to a multi-pitcher perfecto in their first game in the LLWS tourney and followed it with a combo no-hitter in their second game. Then Greenville eked-out their 3rd-round game, 2-1 against Lufkin, TX, with Matthew entering with 2 outs in the 3rd and retiring every batter he faced, fanning his last 11 batters, including striking out the side in the 5th, 6th and 7th. Only one of the 13 batters he faced in that game put a ball in play. Across the three games, he threw 9 innings of no-hit ball, striking out 20. That Game-3 win sent Lufkin to the loser's bracket, where they emerged victorious to face Greenville again for the final game in the U.S. bracket. Lufkin prevailed in their second match-up by a 2-1 score, only to drop the championship game to Japan. Unfortunately for Greenville, unlike the CWS, the LLWS is not a double-elimination tournament. By definition, the winners bracket will always produce a tourney-undefeated team and the losers bracket will always produce a team with one loss to face them in a single final game. Both Greenville and Lufkin had one loss apiece at the end of U.S. play, with each of their losses coming against the other team, but it was Lufkin who got to play for the championship. Who knows; had it been Greenville, perhaps Matthew Matthijs could have handled the Nippon team. I would have loved to have seen him try. Nice to see him hurling in the ACC now.

Hoos and Hokies both on the rise. Virginia has an amazing offensive team - but pitching will be a question mark all season. We have lost two starters to season-ending injuries - both really good pitchers.
Tough weekend series starting tomorrow in Durham vs. the Blue Devils. Games are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday since Sunday is Easter.

ECU plunged in the polls after losing a weekend series for the first time @ UTSA down in San Antonio. Still, their situation is not bad in that they usually start slow and get better as the season goes on.

Virginia Tech’s starting pitchers were a big question. One’s a freshman and the other 2 had two starts between them

A frustrating thing about ECU's schedule is that several in-state rivals, like NC State and Duke, are played as mid-week games, even if they play several times across the season. Presumably, it is because their proximity makes for easy mid-week travel. One problem is that it usually means going with our #4 pitcher, having used 1-3 on the weekends. Oh well, gotta take on all situations if you want to climb in the ranks, although #4 would likely be a pen guy come tourney time (if we can make it to there).

The weekends for Duke, Wake and UNC are going to be reserved for ACC opponents.

ECU bested NC State in a mid-week match-up so, with a good weekend series, they hopefully bump up another notch or two.
BTW, 5 on the list are NC teams. Add 3 from SC and it's 8 from the Carolinas. A total of 17 are east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon.

But the most important name on the list is VA Tech. 😉 They are playing ACC teams on the weekends now, so hopefully they can stay on it. They play Wake Forest this weekend.
