Riffing on the upcoming ceremonial first pitch in the 2024 Opening Day game in the Bronx from the first of these two, I share this highlight: Two of the most beloved Yankees share at least one thing more than the adulation in which they’re held by the Yankee Stadium faithful. On April 5, 2001, Paul O’Neill put the Yankees up 1-0 with a first-inning home run off KC’s Dan Reichert, and Mike Mussina held on to win 1-0. The Bombers won a game in the same fashion in 1941 with Phil “the Scooter” Rizzuto, of all players, providing the first-inning power. These are the only two Yankee 1-0 wins in history where they took that lead on a first-inning home run.

I seem to recall a game from my youth where Hank Bauer homered leading off the game to put us up 1-0. It stayed that way until the top of the ninth, when the opponents hit a 3-run HR to go up 3-1. I believe Bauer homered again in the bottom of the ninth and we lost 3-2.
I believe the 3-run HR that beat us was by Jim Lemon of the Senators off Whitey Ford, pinning Whitey with the loss and depriving him of a complete game shutout. Lemon always hit Ford well. I'll have to research this one to see if I'm remembering correctly.

I did get a lot of stuff right, but not all. Please read - I think you'll enjoy. I'm almost positive I was in Miami Beach with my family and heard a lot of this game on a car radio. I should be excused for any errors as it was 67 years ago, and I was a lad of seven. Listening on a car radio. www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1957/B08070NYA1957.htm
