Former Major-league Fritz Peterson has died, according to Northern Illinois University. Yes, he’ll be remembered for THAT trade with Mike Kekich, but he had a 10-year career with the Yankees, Cleveland and Rangers.

My friend Mark knew Fritz.
I keep his autograph ball in my office...I actually played with him in Fantasy Camp and we exchanged e mails for years..until about 5 years ago. He also had me preview his latest book before he published it and, somewhere, he has signed a picture of the Yankeemobile. He had the lowest ERA at Yankee Stadium..lower than Ford. Dee did not even want to meet him but after she did then she really liked him. He was very religious.

I liked Fritz a lot, and I would get angry with people (fans or not) who made fun of his situation.
A Peterson start was some stress but some faith too. He allowed a lot of hits, few walks, and he was experienced at getting out of trouble.
RIP

Isn’t he famous for swapping wives with a teammate?

I always liked Fritz. He was often compared to the great Whitey Ford, maybe unfairly. He was good player and a good Yankee. RIP Fritz

I got to meet Fritz once, briefly, at an autograph table outside Stan's on River Avenue the night of the 2009 BTB Reunion. He was at a table with Ron Blomberg and Oscar Gamble. Fritz was a really good southpaw for us.

While my first game ever I attended at YS in 1973 featured Mel Stottlemyre pitching vs Baltimore but I sort of had a connection to Fritz Peterson. He was the first Yankee guy I shook hands with during BP. As a 7 year old kid, I was head over heels that I touched a Yankee and got closed to the pinstripe uniform which was sacred .
