Austin Wells has been one of our more disappointing hitters this season. He said sliders are largely to blame.
He's hitting .085 against the pitch, and opponents know it.

Agreed. Rice and Warren were so aligned last night. A lot of chatter. He's doing a nice job back there I think. Rice and Wells is a nice 1-2 catcher punch.

Wells had a 30-40 game stretch last season when he was an absolute stallion, other than that, he's been a .200 hitting donkey

Wells is basically Escarra with more power

And there isn’t a huge difference in their defensive abilities, though Wells is better

Are catchers getting credit for pickoffs/CS? There are probably a handful from Fried alone this year, that could skew the numbers too.

I always felt sorry for the catchers receiving pitchers who were terrible at holding runners, had the big leg kick, etc. Has to be comforting to have a Fried or Pettitte out there...Whitey too!

and I don't know why it's even a question who the #1 catcher is, should have been Rice the second they determined he could man the position, given what Wells has looked like at the dish. Only problem is Rice should be the 1B vs righty starters too. This roster is so messed up. Between 6 guys, you got 3 DH (or should be) and 3 1B/C (with only 1.5 legit hitters out of those 3)

Rice hits righties better...but Wells actually hits lefties better than righties....which of course Paul does as well (no pun there).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought a lot of runners would go first movement on Pettitte, so either had it stolen easily on him or got picked. Posada/Girardi/Leyrtiz may not have had a lot of chances to throw out guys, which was already limited due to the move. But that could just be my memory where I glorified Pettitte's ability to hold runners.

For giggles I looked Andy picked off 98 runners in career, with 36 of them in the first 3 years before runners and coaches wised up a little. His caught stealing % was .32. with league average at 29.3.
