The New York Yankees pounded Baltimore Orioles starter Rodrigo Lopez just a week and a half ago.
Lopez hopes for a better outing this time around when the Orioles and Yankees wrap up a three-game series Thursday at Yankee Stadium.
Lopez (8-12, 6.20 ERA) gave up five runs and nine hits - including four solo homers - in seven innings of a 6-1 loss to the Yankees on Aug. 6. Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera each connected off the right-hander.
"Once I missed my spot, they took advantage of it," Lopez said. "I guess it wasn't my day."
Jaret Wright (9-6, 4.24), who will start Thursday's series finale for New York, gave up just one run in six innings opposite Lopez to earn the victory.
Lopez is 6-7 with a 6.47 ERA in 19 career appearances, including 17 starts, against the Yankees. He gave up four runs but no homers in six innings of an 11-4 victory over New York on June 4.
Lopez, who has allowed 26 home runs in 25 appearances this season, made his first relief appearance since June 22, 2004, on Friday. He allowed three runs in 4 2-3 innings without receiving a decision in the Orioles' 9-2 loss at Boston.
Manager Sam Perlozzo said Lopez was sent to the bullpen so the rest of the rotation could get on a regular schedule, and not because of his erratic performance this season.
The Orioles (52-68) beat the Yankees 3-2 on Wednesday to end a five-game losing streak. Starter Adam Loewen threw 5 2-3 strong innings to beat New York for the second time this month and four relievers combined to hold New York scoreless the rest of the way.
The bullpen, which owns a league-worst 5.17 ERA, blew a two-run lead in Tuesday's 6-3 loss.
The Yankees (70-47) lost for the sixth time in 11 games, and their AL East lead shrank to two games over the second-place Red Sox. New York opens a five-game series in Boston with a day-night doubleheader Friday.
Reliever Octavio Dotel made his season debut 14 months after a ligament was replaced in his right elbow. He threw 13 pitches in the eighth, recording a strikeout and then giving up a single and a walk.
"I'm happy to be back," Dotel said. "Finally, I made it."
Wright won his third straight start on Saturday, allowing one run in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Wright, who walked four batters for the second straight start, has not lasted more than six innings in any of his 20 starts this season and has thrown 100 pitches in only one.
Still, Torre was pleased with the right-hander, who improved to 5-1 over his last seven starts.
"Any time you can get five innings out of someone and give up one run or no runs, that's golden, really, in today's baseball," Torre said. "When you realize how many pitchers it takes you to get through the last three innings, if you can get one guy to get you through the first five, you're all right."
Wright has not allowed a homer in any of his last 10 starts and has allowed just one run in each of his last three.
He is 3-1 with a 5.10 ERA in seven career starts versus the Orioles, including 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts against them this season.
