When Mike Mussina meets Javier Vazquez in Thursday's series finale against the White Sox, it will be a matchup between a pitcher who, for the first time in a while, misplaced his stuff and a pitcher who finally found his.
Mussina is coming off his first loss since June 15. In his previous start, he allowed three earned runs in five innings to the Orioles. He surrendered six hits and struck out five.
Mussina still has a 13-4 record, but he has an ERA of 4.35 since the All-Star break after posting a 3.24 ERA pre-break. He hasn't had a scoreless outing since June 30 and has a 4.37 ERA over his past six outings.
One of those starts was against the White Sox on July 15 when Mussina went six innings and allowed three earned runs to pick up the win in a Yankees sweep.
While Mussina is coming off a rough outing, Vazquez got his first win since July 6 in his last start. He had an ERA of 7.18 in June and July. He snapped out of it, at least for one game, with an eight-inning, two-hit, one-run performance against Toronto in his last start.
On Wednesday, the Yankees hung on for a 7-6 win over the White Sox. The Yankees are now looking for their fifth straight series win and they are three games ahead of the Red Sox in the American League East standings.
Pitching matchup
