agreed!!!....listen as a kid the best players pitched, hit, played ss, played cf, stole bases....and never wore a warm up jacket between innings......its inconceivable now!!!...... They still do...as kids. But how many of them went on to be stud pitchers and hitters in the bigs? Even back in the day when everyone wasn't so coddled it hardly happened. Maybe there could have been more 2 way players but they were always forced to choose?

your talking little league.....today if they're real good they choose.....its that competitive......kids that can hit quickly find out its not as easy vs better comp.......and its possible it could have happened earlier but we've already seen "good hitting pitchers".....even so they're not everyday players type hitters.....we don't even know if ohtani is.....but we'll see won't we.....if he breaks the barrier it'll happen again....also with restrictions on rosters your seeing players who can play various positions all over the place as opposed to simple back ups......a guy who can pitch hit and play the field will be worth his weight in gold to a team.....IF HE CAN DO IT!!!

There's a fine line between success and failure as both a hitter and pitcher...hard enough to sustain a high level at either one, much less both. Pitchers have their off day routines to get ready. Hitters have their daily routines to be ready (and for defense too unless they are DH), regulars or bench guys.
Any baseball player who can pull off being great at both in today's game (not the 20s)...that is SOME special athlete!!! Can't say it's impossible but I'll believe it when I see it.

Good post, yogi. It definitely will be a sensation if Ohtani succeeds going both ways.
Much has changed in the game of baseball. Have you noticed how much younger the players are now? jimbue has mentioned the ban on juice and greenies is forcing the old guys out.
Another thing to consider is the manufacturing of athletes at a young age. Diet and vitamin supplements are a really big thing now. gone are the days of Mantle and Ruth, eating cheeseburgers everyday and heavy drinking everynight.

Ohtani doesn’t drink alcohol. Doesn’t go out with teammates if they are going out to drink.

Top rated kids have personal trainers and nutritionists before they can grow a beard.

ask kyle what his son sacrifices It is not just what they eat/drink or the vitamins they take today but the exercise or workouts regimen, all clubs/travel teams that they are involved in nowadays (for ie AAU) are never ending. There s all of these tournaments and competitions all year around. Kids today are freaks.

Little league? Try through high school. In college or minors it largely becomes one or the other, although there have been a lot of college guys who play both ways too.

Adam Haseley of Virginia, drafted I believe 7th or 6th overall by the Phillies, was a star pitcher/CF for the Hoos. Danny Hultzen and Sean Doolittle were both star pitchers at Virginia, and both played first base and were star hitters when not pitching. In fact, they were the DH's when they pitched.

Rays currently have a top prospect at AAA that is a two way player.

Shohei’s current teammate former Yankee Brandon Laird says he works hard at speaking English and chats with him often to improve.

What the hell is a Ham Fighter anyway? Proper team name is the Hokkaido Nippon-ham Fighters or Nippon-ham Fighters or just one word Fighters No one is fighting ham or any other pork product. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought they were fighting with hams as their weapons.

I thought they were fighting with hams as their weapons. This image of hams being used as weapons is disturbing. A good spiral ham is about as good a friend as one can have.

Americans ruin ham. The Italians and the Spanish do it right.

A good spiral ham is indeed one of life's pleasantries, but if you can get one before the spiral cut and with enough bone sticking out one end to get a good grip, you can swing that thing like a hammer.
